Background

My career started aboard the nuclear submarine USS Rhode Island as a Navy sonar technician, reading acoustic signals where a misinterpretation carried real consequences. Degrees in theoretical mathematics, history with a focus on warfare and behavioral economics, and AI software engineering followed, along with years teaching machine learning and statistics.

Since then I have built a statewide education-funding algorithm that is still in production, founded and scaled an AI department in defense R&D, and led AI products and model evaluation in 2026.

Leadership roles

  1. Jun 2026 – Present

AI Safety, Red-Teaming & Evaluation Consultant

    Self-employed · Remote

Adversarial evaluation of frontier AI models for clients across high-consequence domains.

    • Conduct adversarial evaluations of frontier AI models for clients, systematically attempting to break safeguards and elicit unsafe, policy-violating, or unintended behavior.
    • Stress-test model capabilities to find where performance breaks down and where models exceed their intended limits, and run capability uplift studies measuring whether model access meaningfully increases a user's ability to carry out high-risk tasks.
    • Evaluate models across high-consequence domains, including biology, CBRN, cybersecurity, and medicine.
    • Translate every shortfall into concrete recommendations for model behavior, safeguards, and evaluation coverage, delivered as structured findings that feed directly into clients' model development and safety processes.
    • Clients and technical details are under NDA.
  2. Jan 2026 – Jun 2026

    Employment

    Senior Director of Artificial Intelligence

Frontier Design LLC · Charleston, SC

AI products, data platform, and service structure for an AI consulting and proposal firm.

    • Architected and built a Claude-based proposal and whitepaper engine that parses a structured past-performance knowledge base, researches the target entity, runs a realism check, drafts in the firm's voice, and self-scores against an eight-dimension rubric.
    • Built the structured past-performance knowledge base and an LLM rubric autograder, validated with a study correlating scores across rubric categories.
    • Led the AWS project database and Salesforce build that replaced spreadsheet workflows, and standardized the firm's AI service offerings into productized packages.

Case studies: An agentic proposal engine with its own evaluation layer

  3. Aug 2020 – Jan 2026

    Employment

    Director of Artificial Intelligence

    ORBIS, Inc. · Charleston, SC

Founded and led the AI function of a defense engineering and R&D firm, from strategy through production delivery.

    • Founded the AI department at one engineer and scaled it to ten core engineers; led cross-departmental programs of 30+ through the project managers under my direction, and worked directly with the C-suite on AI strategy, funding, and headcount.
    • Created proprietary, copyrighted AI/ML IP that supplied roughly 80% of ORBIS R&D revenue.
    • Procured and led three consecutive DoD contracts worth approximately $7M for AI radiographic defect recognition, approved for shipyard integration on submarine builds.
    • Designed, trained, and deployed locally secured LLMs for workflow control; led ship-state forecasting that achieved parametric-roll detection and removed roughly $10K of hardware per unit sold.
    • Rated 5/5 on performance for five consecutive years.

Case studies: Founding and scaling an AI department · AI defect recognition approved for submarine-construction shipyards · Secure, locally deployed LLMs and the governance around them · Ship-state forecasting and a hardware cost removed
